This was the first book, that really got me into fantasy. Here is the problem, why is this book forgotten? Well because after about book 5 or so (hey dont quote me on when they go bad), they are not that good. That really does not take away from this book though, and because we are up to book 33, book 1 I think gets lost in the shuffle. You have magicians, you have kings, you have a boy, Bink, who in a land where everyone has a magic talent does not know what his is. It is a fun story, not a complex story, but in the end that is ok.
This is a childrens book, or YA book as we can call them now. Don’t get it twisted, there is more enjoyment to be found for the under 14 crowd then their might be for the over 30 crowd, but you know that is what they said about Harry Potter.
Title: The Sleeping Dragon
Author: Joel Rosenberg
Publisher: Roc
ISBN: 0451453506
Now a bonus Forgotten Friday book since we are hosting it this week. The Sleeping Dragon by Joel Rosenberg, part of the Guardians of the Flame series. This is a story that was probably a daydream at some point of everyone that likes Sword and Sorcery Fantasy. A bunch of college students get tricked into being ported into a fantasy world with magic and all the trapping of a gaming session. But what if you had the knowledge of our world in a fantasy world. Well you would make guns and gunpowder obviously. It is a real nice series, I think it just got hurt by the ability to find the book as it went out of print for a while, and then the rest of the series took a long break before they came out with a new book and it really did not get the publicity it should have.

Ah, good ol’ Xanth! Anyone offended by puns should steer clear of this one. Amusing, juvenile and just plain fun, this is definitely a good one to pick up to remember the good old days or to recommend to another generation of readers.
The Rosenberg book also brings back good memories. For a book that personofies some of the most pervasive cliches in epic fantasy, it also definitely broke some ground with respect to the characters that died or did not do the expected. It was an entertaining mix of the expected and the unexpected and fueled the fantasies of many a young teen.
