E-Zine Progress - A Labor of Love

June 23rd, 2006 · 6 Comments

Here is a brief gist:\par
\par
- I have two articles in hand I’m running with, both written by familiar writerly types and their checks are in the mail. I have a third commissioned and always looking for more. \par
\par
- I have several reviews, but would love to have more - if you have something to say about a book, please feel free to submit. I have no cap on reviews I will accept. \par
\par
- Real editors should have a international holiday. My god, I’m at the low end of the stick (hanging on for dear life) here and I’m still making my way through what is now 230+ stories. The term co-editor never seemed so damn enticing in my life. If you have’t heard from me (and happen to be reading this - email me), it’s possible you are still under serious consideration, as I’m still holding on to a little over a dozen I really like. I plan on being completely caught up by next week - and then focus on issue #2. I just sent my very first acceptance letter, and the final decisions will occur in the next couple of weeks\par
\par
- How is it going to look? I have no damn clue, but I have confidence in my peoples at being the best at what they do. The look will be something that of course will evolve from reaction we get after each issue, and that goes the same for making it as accesible as possible for readers in whatever format they wish to read it in. My understanding (and I’ve see art by one), is that we have some real talented people we are lucky to have helping us out with visuals. At any rate, I have little doubt that Dave and Damon are going to put together something hot. Once again, I will be riding coattails.\par
\par
- The most difficult aspect has been coming up with a title :D I hope to have one by next week.\par
\par
I also want to note that people should really appreciate what an outfit like Strange Horizons does on a weekly basis for SF/F fans- it’s fucking amazing. \par
\par
Submission Guidelines can be read here (I’m going to add some more to this soon).\par

I’ll probably be doing some reviews and short stories soon - after next week at any rate. For the reviews - how recent do they have to be? Do they have to be 2006 releases, or just novels released which haven’t been reviewed that much (ie there would be no point in reviewing Mieville’s Perdido Street Station, but what about a review for Ian Macleod’s The Light Ages? Or something like Michael de Larrabeiti’s Borribles trilogy, which has barely any reviews written on it.

As this has progressed, I’m interested in any review that’s thoughtful, and presents the writers unique perspective and interpretation.\par

I expect things to change after the first issue (from the experience with it), and I will speak on them when I have it settled in my own mind. If somebody has a specific question about a book, I’d suggest emailing me with the query.

I’m still expecting your books to review in the post but nothing has yet. :-) Someone should really take the Italian postal system in hand!

< ![CDATA[I hate to knock the Italian postal system, it's more of an island thing than an Italian thing. The Postal service here is small thus slow anyways, and it gets overwhelemed during summer months (beach/vacation town) as the popualtion here increases substantially.]]>

Did you get the review I sent on Lords of Rainbow, Jay?

Just wondering, but you said you wanted more reviews.
