Erikson did a couple of new things in his latest novel that are all rather interesting and he did it while doing some things I haven’t see anyone mention yet (and I won’t until later - this is a book that makes me excited to review). I realized halfway through this book that I’m going to be devastatingly sad when the day comes I can’t get my dose of Malaz just about each year.
I’m still fighting a couple of instances that I don’t quite understand how they could have occurred, in terms of correlating with Esslemont’s Return of the Crimson Guard — but I figure I have a month or so to reread Esslemont (I’m sure everybody knows already - I don’t report news, but it was pushed back (the regular version - but you can win one of ten copies here, don’t forget!). That is also why my review isn’t out, I’m trying to at least be semi-responsible.
While all of these novels show something very drastic occurring in a setting or character we love these last two (TotH and RotCG) really changed the landscape and that Erikson continues to do so this far in is rather unusual for a series of length.
At any rate I will be writing a review, which wasn’t the plan, I don’t like writing reviews of books this far in a series as the mechanics of it (who are we writing for etc ) really tend to annoy me and even if I cared for the public service aspect who buys book seven and not book eight, really? While I won’t say it’s my favorite in the series, there were a couple of really nice moments I dug that otherwise probably won’t be talked about unless I do it and they need to be worshipped!
Regarding some other stuff, I’m told on the 29th this month Gregory Frost’s Lord Tophet comes out so my interview will be live maybe next week and I’ve initialized an interview I’m conducting with author James Blaylock (one of my favorites) that Brian is going to kick me some questions to add as well. I’ve always said interviewing takes little to no actually talent or skill (as we can see numerous examples of) but I’ve really felt in the groove lately and I think I’m doing my best ones recently and I think the Frost interview will continue that (which has everything to do with the writers allowing for it to be that way). We have a lot of cool stuff coming up but I can’t really offer a hard schedule as our ability to post new content will be in flux as we carry over our site redesign this month. This is just the visible part of steady efforts (may other occurs in the Bat cave) to improve and expand upon what we do and we are very excited for the second half of this year as we have taken some steps and we are eager to see where they takes us.
I did forget to mention in my last Bookspot-Roundup (for which I apologize) that a couple of our forum members signed up for blogs we host. Remember if you are a blogger and want to get the advantages of having a hosted Wordpress blog (and the Wordpress format is pretty damn sweet), and you can keep your silly amazon affiliate links you’re making no money on anyway - just drop us a line. We really have no content restrictions barring something completely out of the ordinary, we can carry over all existing content you have on a current blog if that’s applicable. With our site redesign we are going to really optimize the blogs we host and we have a couple of cool author driven projects we are going to implement at the end of the year to make that blog-ring really sweet, right now they are just thrown together because of a loony idea had that D&D put together, and on personal note it really has worked for me as I find myself blogging more.
At any rate we have My Get up and Go, Got up and Went and My Philosophical Diary added to the Bookspot family! Welcome!
Verse of the day:
We both on assignment to unearth the diamond
When you start climbin’
And them eyes start shinin’
You be strugglin’ and strivin’
And they think you prime-timin’
Maintain and keep silence make note and observation
This confrontation
This is the daily operation
A concentration
Stay focused on my recitation
‘Bout to reach my destination with no pause or hesitation
Baby make the preperation ‘cuz this ain’t no recreation
This is Pro Ball!
And we lettin you know y’all
At the show y’all
Doin’ this for dough y’all
Get the phone call
And I’m ready to blow y’all
‘Bout to go y’all
Been a pleasure to know y’all
And I’m lettin’ you know that…
