Time for this week’s recap of all things FBS!

-Exclusives:

- We have 3 exclusive sample chapters to Tobias Buckell’s forthcoming Sly Mongoose from Tor. This will be the third novel in a interconnected (but individually stand-alone) series- the first two books, very fun stuff (see my review of the first book, Crystal Rain here.) Thanks to the author and Dot Diggity.

- We also have the prologue and the first chapter of what’s looking like a pretty nice suspense/horror in Rain Dogs from Gary McMahon.  Thanks for the continued support from Ian and Humdrumming

In the coming weeks you will see more exclusives from at least three publishers we haven’t see at the ‘bookspot yet with this feature and more from the folks who are already cool!

-Reviews:

- Craig Gidney reviews Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale:

“A gaslight Gothic fantasy-mystery hybrid.”

Remember we have the exclusive on the first 2 chapters of this novel!

- Medora, resident bookspot librarian, takes on Phillip Pullman’s Once Upon a Time in the North :

“He shook his head to clear it, and drops of blood flew off and splashed across his face. Simultaneously his left ear felt as if a tiger had taken a bite out of it, and Lee had to hold his breath to avoid gasping.”

and Lyra’s Oxford:

“The witch, still just alive, was crawling toward Lyra, crawling like a broken lizard, and there were sparks around her - real sparks - as her knife grated on the stone.”

Check out that review!

- Maria reviews the prolific Mike Resnick’s Stalking the Unicorn from Pyr:

“This is a quick read. It’s good old-fashioned fun without trying too hard”

- Brian reviews the film, Wanted:

“Wanted is a Hong Kong style action movie that has been stripped of character, elegance and grace but becomes an entertaining, kinetic wonder”

This is a DVD movie for me; J.G. Jones is one of my favorite a current artists but the source material is so-so to me.I will also watch any Jolie movie to read the credits.

- Jeff Sullins reviews A Druid Born by Christina McCarthy:

“A Druid Born” very much has the feel of a motivational work. It was a pleasant, if brief, read, and one which I would not hesitate to recommend to readers aged 10-16.”

- Val keeps with the classics and icon and reviews Arthur C. Clarke’s 2010:Odyssey Two. He also survived to read and review the ninth book of Jordan’s Wheel of Time sequence, Winter’s Heart.

- Jeremy visits the Wizards of the Coast reviewing Cam Bank’s The Sellsword:

“Set in the world of Krynn in the aftermath of the War of the Lance, the mercenary for hire Vanderjack took a job to earn some money. Then he got stuck with an unwanted companion, an old acquaintance who wanted to settle a grudge with him, had to deal with his haunted sword, and made powerful enemies. Then things got really interesting.”

-Book Contest:

Sweet contest here where 10 members of the ‘bookspot family get a chance to win a copy of Ian Cameron Esslemont’s forthcoming Return of the Crimson Guard! For more information and to enter GO HERE!

-Heliotrope:

Heliotrope has found a cover artist as we are bringing back Noah Barrett who drew the cover and art for issue#3. Noah will also be helping us with some design aspects to our new site design (at FBS) tentatively scheduled for August 1st.

-Upcoming:

My interview with novelist Gregory Frost has come to a conclusion and just waiting for a proper time of release and I will also have another installment of  Forgotten Friday later today.

Lots of good stuff :) I really liked the Wanted comic book series, but I’m torn on the movie. I may watch it though if we take Zane to watch Wall*E ;) Happy 4th btw!

    Happy 4th to all!

I find that I’m not the biggest fan of Millar’s writing (though there are some exceptions). My understanding is the movie deviates so from the source material that I actually heard it specifically referred to as (on a podcast) as ‘a movie not based on a comic’. I don’t really care about deviations and such to be honest, but this is movie that I can wait for on DVD. It’s not say…Watchmen or Dark Knight.
