James P. Blaylock Interview

August 9th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Alright people, I have a interview here with James P. Blaylock, one of the people whose books really opened doors for me, or rather showed me they existed. His The Last Coin was one of those books like Carroll’s The Land of Laughs that just kind of launched me into new corners of the fantastic. He has a couple new projects coming up, including a collection of his Steampunk work (which he helped pioneer) entitled The Adventures of Langdon St Ives being published by Subterranean Press and a new novel, Knights of the Cornerstone from ACE - both coming later this year.

This interview was conducted by myself and Brian Lindenmuth so I also want to thank him for the collabo. This interview is a bit shorter than the last couple from me and that can be attributed to me being unhappy with my contract. What I was most surprised was a bit I didn’t include (when you interview people - often there are questions and answers that don’t make it to the final cop, because for every semi-insightful or even just acceptable question you ask, you also bomb as well as an interviewer- it’s what happen when you, I think are close to a material and not painting with broad strokes and working with a stencil or mold from interview to interview, and it’s something I do try to avoid (though obviously some questions have to be asked in some form). At any rate I was surprised he hadn’t seen Rockesteer (RIP - Dave Stevens, one of the best) - I don’t even know why, I guess it’s because when the summer blockbuster movie on SF/F fan blogging hits I’m going to be there looking at the credits seeing if I get my proper credit! So what we have learned is that I’m a substantially sadder person than Mr. Blaylock!

Check it out!

I do want to thank Bill at Subterranean Press for initializing this and Mr. Blaylock for the time.

Great interview! Thanks. Really made me smile. I can’t wait for the books.

I have enjoyed all the Blaylock books I have read to date and was very excited to find Knights of the Cornerstone. Sadly I was sorely disappointed in this book. It had none of the mystery, quirky characters, terrifying images, edge of seat can’t wait to turn the page oh but I’m too scared to read any more feeling to it. I kept reading and hoping something was going to jump out and surprise me, but it didn’t. A very pedantic and predictable read. But I shall try his next one in hopes that this was a one off, knocked off in between a “resting” period.
