*opens window for fresh air as Mockra always gives him a headache*
Alright peeps, it’s that time again to take a look at the week of bookspot that was! I’m going to be a little ghost this week and next here as we work on the new site design. We are in the grunt stages of the the redesign so it’s time to troop! Even with the biggest project since Betamax to VHS conversion going we still have people delivering the goods this week!
-Exclusives:
Two new exclusives for you this one complete pieces of short fiction and an excerpt coming from a forthcoming novel.
- The first is a story by Steve Berman that was published in the Paper Cities Anthology edited by Ekaterina Sedia by Steve Berman entitled Tearjerker. It will also be included is Berman’s forthcoming Second Thoughts. check that out here
- The second is from a new forthcoming novel by M.L.N. Hanover (aka Daniel Abraham) called Unclean Spirits the first book in a sequence called Black Sun’s Daughter. I’m really excited to hear more about this project and we got the exclusive on 3000 word right here, right now!
More coming, as always and thanks to Mr. Berman and Mr. Abraham for choosing us a venue, the online home for samples of what’s hot in speculative fiction and well…if I’d let you see my cards you’d see it’s only getting better!
-Interviews:
- This week I put up an interview with James Blaylock, one of the real door openers in my reading journey with books like the Last Coin and The Papar Grail and he’s got two new projects coming, a collection for Subterranean and a new novel from ACE so here’s a nice - a bit shorter than usual for me - interview with Blaylock with assistance by Brian. Blaylock is a former Philip K. Dick and World Fantasy Award winner and is about as money as you can get in fiction. Hell, if you just bought fiction exclusively from him and Powers you’d probably think reading was still it and video games are a fad.
-Reviews:
- Neth reviews John Scalzi’s latest, Zoe’s Tale, from Tor.
“Zoë’s Tale is far and away Scalzi’s best book yet. His choice of words makes for fast, easy, and enthralling reading. His humor and wit entertain and even though this might not be the most innovative or mind-blowing science fiction out there, it’s certainly among the most fun to read.”
As people may know from my own review of his Ghost Brigades, Scalzi’s work is real fun.
- Val continues his affair with Modesitt and reviews Mage-Guard of Hamor.
- The Mammoth Book of Extreme Fantasy is hauled around by Lifeinmoments.
- Our resident love/lust expert Kissa reviews Dark Side of the Moon by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
- Trinu reviews Glenda Larke’s Heart of the Mirage.
“From my early childhood, my life was paved with the mosaics of illusion, each piece another tale of deceit – or delusion. A history of betrayal… This is a story of treachery: my treachery, and the treachery of those who betrayed me. It is the story of mirages, and of those who made them. It is my story.”
- Amber reviews Ghostgirl by Tanya Hurley
“Ghostgirl is a sweet little tale about a high school girl who just wants to be noticed by the cutest guy in school, unfortunately for her, she dies before this can happen.”
- Last and once again certainly least (as this is me), but perhaps most exciting, as I mentioned in previous posts the ‘bookspot is now in league with entities that allows us to review new and forthcoming DVDs from several movies studios (which we are adding to each day. We hope this is a sign of us always looking to expand, and our growing reach - it’s not at all about being ‘close’ with these people - you either do digits or you don’t. Hood, I love dealing with logical business people! This is my review of Transformer Cybertron: The Ultimate Collection, a 7-disc set from Paramount chronicling more adventures of the Transformers for a new (apparently less tasteful) generation. Check that out!
-Contests:
We had 4 contests end this month and more to come, and we have one active now!
- We have an opportunity to win The Night Sessions by Ken MacLeod signed by the man himself! A nice opportunity to win a book from one of my favorite SF writers. GET IN ON IT!
Okay, people, as usual more to come in all facets, today, tomorrow all the way to the Courts of Chaos!
*closes window and does nothing fantastic, and sit on his ass to build Rome in a day*
