Wyatt Weston lives in extreme poverty, in an era of no mass media, no private transportation where the police hover over the streets to keep order. He also has two other problems, one his girlfriend, Jennie, went missing and he is the only one who seems to remember her existence. The second, his limb fade away, dissolve. Only though an act of will and extreme effort is he able to rebuild his body. One day someone is going to find out he’s different. However, his life becomes more complex when he accepts the advances of Rachel Void, one of the privileged and gets promoted, before catching the eye of Victor a powerful presences in the Heartland, were the Committee that rules the world in which Wyatt lives. In his quest to find Jennie, he becomes Victor’s bodyguard and learns the secrets of the Heartland and more secrets about his true identity.

Personal Thoughts - I am not a big lover of sci-fi books, however, this futuristic story makes for an interesting read. Wyatt, the main character, leads us through the plot, were we learn the seedy truths about how the world is ruled and how far the powerful will go to gain more power. Throughout the story Wyatt is searching for Jennie, convinced she as been spirited away, perhaps even into the Heartland. He also tries to keep his special ability to heal a secret from Victor and his family. He does seem to have complicated relationships with the strong female characters in this book. Rachel Void wants to escape the mundane life in the Heartland, and escape her family. And Anna, Victor’s daughter, who trains Wyatt in armed combat, yet seems defenseless regarding a vicious father. I found Wyatt’s journey to find himself a little confusing at times, as his mind spirals into chaos when he learns more about the Heartland and himself.

The actually structure of the communities within this futuristic image of the world was confusing for me and I felt this was due to Wyatt’s perception of his world. However, overall this is an interesting story, with strong characters, and is well written.
