It was difficult to choose a favourite story from this collection and I can see why the editors found it so difficult to chose which stories to enter into the collection.
Edited by Victoria Hoyle and Robin Lunn
A collection of short fantasy stories, written by authors between the ages of 10 and 16 for a 2006 fantasy writers contest. There are 21 stories that cover a range of fantasy creatures and unusual situations. The inside cover lists the stories, with the authors names and their ages. Not wishing to give too much away, I won’t go into further detail about each story. However, I will say most were very entertaining and probably one of the best collections of short fantasy tales I’ve read in a while.
Personal Thoughts – I was pleasantly surprised at the standard of writing in this collection of short stories. These young authors were adapt at telling an interesting and entertaining story, developing strong characters and interesting creatures in but a few short pages. The tales range from modern urban, to mythical ancient, with some surprising twists and point of views from the young authors. Some stories were better written than others; however there wasn’t any that I didn’t enjoy.
It was difficult to choose a favourite story from this collection and I can see why the editors found it so difficult to chose which stories to enter into the collection. However, the stories that stood out for me were Candlelight, Pickleberry, At What Price and Shade. These stories, for me, were mature, entertaining and well written. I felt all the stories had a level of maturity that I hadn’t expected from such young authors and I’m sure some of these young authors will develop their skills and become successful novelist.
My only complaint about this collection was the stories were too short. Just when you’re into the story it suddenly ends. Some of these stories needed expanding, as they left me wondering what happened next.
