So what can I say, the last two reviews I have written have been on novels about dragons, oh well I like dragons. Who here can honestly say they have never wished dragons were real and that they could be the one who finds them.
This anthology of short stories was to say the least an interesting collect. With most anthologies that I have read (being almost completely of the Forgotten Realms world) I have found that I enjoy more than most of the stories involved. With The Dragon Quintet I found that the stories I liked were not only in majority but were gender bias. With stories by Orson Scott Card, Mercedes Lackey, Tanith Lee, Elizabeth Moon, and Michael Swanwick, I found that the male authors included in this anthology seemed to be severly lacking in the idea of what a fantasy novel truly was. Though I can’t deny I somewhat enjoyed the Card story in this novel it was nothing impressive and definitely would have made this book better if it had been lost. This is not to say it isn’t a good story, but in all honesty I know I’m sick of reading modern fantasy after the publication of Harry Potter as well as Feist’s Faerie Tale. The three female writers include in this novel did an excellent job creating truly enthalling fantasy short stories. In fact while reading the preface to Lackey’s story Joust in the book I noticed that she decided to write a full sized novel after the short story in this anthology and I actually found it in the bookstore. The novel has been tempting me to purchase it since I first saw it, though even though Lackey took it from a short story to a full sized novel I know how the story ends. From Michael Swanwick I got a very Science Fiction feel, and Science Fiction is something that I seem to be unable to agree with.
After much internal debating and criticizing I would have to give this novel a well deserved 6. And I know what you all are thinking, “Wow, a 6, when it comes to Algorath that is pretty low.” This is in fact true, but Card and Swanwick slowed the anthology down enough that I was tempted to skip a couple pages, but the three femal authors, Lacker, Lee, and Moon without a doubt make a novel worth reading in my mind. Next time you see this in the bookstore pick it up and read it.
